VI Systems is a Berlin-based high-tech company specializing in next-generation optoelectronic components for ultra-fast data communication and sensing. We combine deep expertise in photonics with a strong focus on innovation, technology transfer, and customer-tailored solutions. Our portfolio covers:
- VCSEL chips (vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers)
- PIN photodiode chips for optical communication
- High frequency VCSEL fibre-coupled modules
- High-frequency PIN fibre coupled
- High-speed integrated circuits and transmitter and receiver assemblies
We also provide engineering services — from wafer mapping and custom laser design to advanced modelling of thermal and electro-optical performance — helping our partners turn ideas into working solutions and support foundry-based manufacturing.
Labs and facilities
VI Systems relies on outsourced manufacturing and operates a dedicated optical laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation for optical imaging and high-frequency measurements.
Recent advances
Our recent developments include:
- Multi-aperture VCSELs up to 112 Gbit/s (PAM-4 modulation)
- Single-mode VCSELs with self-injection locking, achieving resonance frequencies of up to and above 100 GHz
- High-speed MMF-compatible PIN photodiodes with electric bandwidths beyond 60 GHz at 25Ω input and PIN modules with electric bandwidths beyond 40 GHz for 50Ω environment.
With our VCSEL modules data rates of 212 Gbit/s PAM4 over 60m OM4 fibre is reached
Involvement in SpinDataCom
The SpinDataCom project addresses the growing need for faster, greener, and more reliable data networks. VI Systems brings its long-standing expertise in device integration, ultrafast measurement, and advanced packaging to make this vision a reality.
Within the consortium, we lead the development of compact integrated packages for electrically pumped spin-VCSELs and conduct high-frequency testing. Our work aims to demonstrate 40 GHz free-space data transmission and to explore polarization oscillations above 100 GHz as a brand-new coding method.
